You put your key in the ignition, turn and crank and nothing happens. The lights will not come on, the radio will not play and the car just will not start. Chances are your car battery is dead and it is time for a charge or a complete change.

How can you tell the difference?

You can start out by trying to charge the battery that is already in place. If you have a charger, fantastic. If not, you can get a jump from someone else.

Before trying to charge the battery, do check to see if its fluids are filled up and that the battery terminals are clean. If there is a lot of powder on the terminals, clean this off with a wet rag that has some baking soda on it.

Once the battery appears to be in good working order, go ahead and connect the charger or jumper cables. Make sure the charger is turned off or the jumping vehicle is not started at this point. When the cables are in place, start the jumping car or turn on the charger. Do give the battery some time to charge up. If your battery has a charge indicator, make sure it is in the green zone before disconnecting.

Put the new battery in ? Lift the new battery into the tray and replace the hold-down clamp. Make sure both terminal ends are free of corrosion and then attach them to the appropriate positive or negative slots. Tighten down the connection.

As Ferrari and Maserati are both part of the Fiat Group, and were in fact in the same sub-group, it made sense to modify the Enzo to get Maserati back as a winner. Now, Ferrari and Maserati have been put in different sub-groups, so this sort of collaboration is not expected in the future.

Suspension is by double wishbones, with inboard spring and damper units acting through pushrods. These are mounted horizontally as on the Enzo. The dampers have variable rates. Quite a car, but not as extreme as the Bugatti Veyron or the latest Saleen S7.

Following the racing success of the MC12, Maserati is now to build a more extreme version - the MC12 Corsa. The MC12 Corsa has a massively uprated Enzo V-12 engine giving about 750bhp. You can get this for about $1.3 million - or ?700,000 or Euros 1 million depending where you live.

But this is not a road car, nor will you be able to race it in any official categories ? so this is a trackday special at a huge price. Maserati plans to build about 12 MC12 Corsas a year.

The Ford Mondeo sedan was for the European market. Travel to the lands of the United States and North American and you would find the Ford Contour. The issue could have ended calmly on March 1, 2001 when an arbitration panel unanimously concurred that the Toyota Motor Corp. was liable for the damage of Jeff Meckstroth's two-year-old Lexus RX300 sport utility engine. However, the dispute worsened when two representatives of the automaker packed up their papers and referred casually to other identical cases they were handling.

"Then we had our suspicions up that this isn't an unusual case, that Lexus knows about the problem, and has formed a response - just deny, deny, deny," said Meckstroth, a 47-year-old New Orleans stockbroker. "We decided to sue." His case sprouted into a class suit to include prior and current owners of about four million Toyota and Lexus vehicles complaining about engine sludge.

Engine sludge is caused by the accumulation of gelling or solidifying oil. It usually occurs at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge is a cause of major engine problems. "The terms of the settlement and the settlement itself have no finding of defect in the product," Toyota spokesman Xavier Dominicis said however. "They're not saying these engines are predisposed to sludge."
