Market Shifts To Small, Flashy And Sensible Cars

Automakers have earlier placed their 2007 aces on display at the South Florida International Auto Show. Regardless of the booming complaints about high gasoline prices, fuel-saver vehicles were outshined by fast, sensible yet costly gas-guzzlers at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This shift reflects what American enthusiasts really wanted in a vehicle.

Said auto show is flocked by luxury and sports vehicles from BMW, Lexus, Dodge, Hummer, Mercedes-Benz and other auto giants. Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvettes also made a big draw. Aficionados lined up to take a glimpse of the recent ground-breaking cars. Dealers, on the other hand, set up cameras so take photos of high-end sports cars.

Several Miami Beach residents were eyeing all-new Lexus LS460 which is priced at $64,000. On one hand, other fanatics were fascinated by Chevrolet's fuel-saving vehicles that use either gasoline or a mixture of gas and ethanol.

"People don't come to the show to see fuel-efficient cars. They come here to see the flashy cars. New at this year's show was the clutch of E85 flexible fuel SUVs and light trucks at the Chevrolet stand, offering estimated city mileage starting about 15 miles per gallon and 21 mpg on highways," says Terry McCabe, owner of a diesel-powered Volkswagen Beetle.

Chevrolet flaunted its Aveo, a compact station wagon priced at $14,000. It has a rating of 27/37 mpg in city/highways. Chevy also displayed its Camaro concept vehicle. The latter is a streamline version of a muscle car in the 1960s.

Hybrids from Toyota, Ford and Honda were also presented to the audience. These hybrids run on an electric motor and a gasoline-powered engine. They are priced from upward of $20,000 to more than $42,000.

Toyota, Honda and Nissan also displayed their cars that run on gasoline engines. Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, also dragged the crowd closer. Luxurious cars like Porsche Turbo Coupe and BMW 760Li were also deemed stunners of the show. The former is priced at $147,000, while the latter is made cheaper at $132,000.

Replace A Dead Car Battery

You put your key in the ignition, turn and crank and nothing happens. The lights will not come on, the radio will not play and the car just will not start. Chances are your car battery is dead and it is time for a charge or a complete change.

How can you tell the difference?

You can start out by trying to charge the battery that is already in place. If you have a charger, fantastic. If not, you can get a jump from someone else.

Before trying to charge the battery, do check to see if its fluids are filled up and that the battery terminals are clean. If there is a lot of powder on the terminals, clean this off with a wet rag that has some baking soda on it.

Once the battery appears to be in good working order, go ahead and connect the charger or jumper cables. Make sure the charger is turned off or the jumping vehicle is not started at this point. To connect the cables, start with the red one and connect it to the positive terminal and the black to the negative. This will be the same setup for a charger or a jump. When the cables are in place, start the jumping car or turn on the charger. Do give the battery some time to charge up. If your battery has a charge indicator, make sure it is in the green zone before disconnecting.

If the battery charges and will hold the charge, this is all you need to do. If your battery will not accept a charge, you may need to purchase a replacement battery. To change out an old battery with a new one, follow these steps:

Purchase the right battery ? Check the size of the battery in your car owner manual or from the existing battery itself. Then go to a shop that sells batteries. If you cannot determine what size battery you need, an auto parts store can get this information from the make, model and year car you are driving.

Take out the old battery ? Make sure the car is off and then take off the negative cable from the battery. You will need to loosen the nut with a wrench to get this done. Now, pull up and twist on the end of the cable to get the terminal to come free. Repeat the process with the red cable, or positive. Once the cables are detached, you will need to remove the battery clamp. A combination wrench or socket and ratchet will be needed for this. Lift the battery out of the tray to fully remove it from the car.

Clean the tray ? Take the time to wash out any corrosion left behind in the tray. A water and baking soda mix will work fine here. Make sure the tray is dried off before proceeding to the next step.

Put the new battery in ? Lift the new battery into the tray and replace the hold-down clamp. Make sure both terminal ends are free of corrosion and then attach them to the appropriate positive or negative slots. Tighten down the connection.

At this point, your car should start normally. If it does not, you may have a problem that goes beyond the battery. If your new battery loses its charge rapidly, a problem with the alternator could be indicated.

North America?s Ford Contour

The Ford Mondeo sedan was for the European market. Travel to the lands of the United States and North American and you would find the Ford Contour. The Ford Contour would be the Ford Mondeo?s American counterpart. This sedan was actually sold by the Ford Motor Company starting from 1995 up until 2000. Fact is, this vehicle actually was the basis for building a version of this under the Mercury brand. And the result came to be the Mercury Mystique and later on became the Mercury Cougar. The Ford Contour was found in the Ford Motor Company?s line up filling the niche between the Ford Escort and the Ford Taurus.

The Ford Contour has a DOHC V6 engine with 24 valves. It has an aluminum block and aluminum heads. This has a displacement of 155 cubic inches. It can produce some 170 units of bhp at 6250 rpm, and 165 pound feet at 4250 rpm. It has also been equipped with a five speed manual transmission system. The wheelbase of the Ford Contour measures 106.5 inches, 183.9 inches in length and has a curb weight of 2910 pounds.

From 1995 to 1996, the Ford Contour came to be body colored. The front seats were recessed to the back so as to improve rear seat leg room. This is compared to the first wave of Ford Contours that entered the American automobile market. After a year, changes were still done. Traction control no longer was given as an option. The remote fuel door release feature was deleted and the fuel door that this batch held had a flanged opening. Made available were an interior trunk light, a tilt steering wheel, and a power antenna. In 1997 to 1998, the Ford Contours that entered the streets sported front and rear end designs that were new. There were new alloy wheel designs. The sail panels on the rear door windows were now smooth and held the word ?Contour? emblazoned on it.

As per the last years of the Ford Contour, it still continually received changes. In 1998 to 1999, the Ford Contour deleted one of its trim levels. There was a clock in radio available. There were also some color revisions. The rear window and the brake light designs had changed. For Canada, this was the last year of the Ford Contour. In the United States, 2000 was the last year for the vehicle.

Zastava To Produce Opel Vehicles

Reuters report, General Motors has contracted a deal with Zastava automaker for the production of Opel vehicles. Production will transpire at Zastava?s complex in Kragujevac in central Serbia.

According to the source familiar with the agreement, "They will sign on Thursday. The production of the first Opel Astra vehicles is expected to start in 2008."

Another source familiar with the negotiation has also confirmed the deal. Last year the state-owned Zastava, exporter of Yugi cars to the United States was only able to produce 15,000 cars which is less than its annual capacity of 60,000 vehicles. Zastava also caters to Italy?s Fiat producing the Punto cars.

These Punto cars are marketed in Serbia and the rest of the neighboring Balkan countries under the brand ?Zastava 10?. Zastava was also given by Fiat the authority to distribute the cars on the Russian market.

Reuters has quoted a government source saying, "The deal with General Motors will enable Zastava to work with modern technology, raising its chances of fully benefiting in the coming privatization process."

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said that the Serbian automaker is aiming to produce around 10,000 vehicles by 2010. He also said, "This contract is good for Kragujevac and domestic car industry, because we thus join the trends of technology and business operation of the international automotive industry."

And the latest development on this issue is that the Serbian government has already approved the import of around 8,300 duty-free Opel Astra cars of which 3,300 are to be imported by the end of this year while the remaining 5,000 by 2008. These imported Opel Astra cars will cost 10,800 euros or $14,900 for the basic version which was previously sold at 12,800 euros or $17,700.

Pontiac, Toyota Bags Award At The Chicago Auto Show

In connection with the ongoing 2007 Chicago Auto Show, Consumer Guide Automotive honored the Pontiac G8 and the Toyota Highlander as the winners of their Most Significant New Introduction Awards. This is only the second year for the award and yet it is valued highly around the automotive circle.

The reverence given to the award is due to the fact that Consumer Guide Automotive has been a part of the automotive industry for more than 35 years. Throughout its lengthy history, the leading source of new and used car reviews has proven time and time again that they are the best at what they do. And this year?s awards will no doubt be a big boost to the popularity of the two vehicles recognized.

The aim of the awarding body in giving out such award was outlined by Kirk Bell, the associate publisher of Consumer Guide Automotive. ?With so many factors to consider, car shopping can be n overwhelmingly confusing experience. By naming the most significant new car and truck introductions, we?re helping car buyers everywhere identify vehicles worth consideration. Visitors attending the nation?s premier consumer show here in Chicago can see the standout vehicles firsthand.?

Indeed, these vehicles standout among the lot of other automobiles being shown off at the Chicago Auto Show - just like the rear-wheel drive Pontiac G8. The full sized sedan shown at this year?s Chicago Auto Show is just a prototype, however, most of the features and specifications that it has at present will also be present on the mass produced version of the car. The car is configured as a rear-wheel drive one but its performance is of high caliber, thanks to the efforts by GM?s Holden division which is based in Australia in developing the design of the Pontiac G8. The performance car exhibits some of the exterior designing of the Pontiac GTO and not the classic design. In fact, it holds that of the latest GTO which was discontinued again this year.

The Toyota Highlander, a mid-size SUV, is also making waves in the said segment. The sport utility vehicle was eligible for the award since it is a completely redesigned vehicle. Its only resemblance to present models available in the market is the vehicle?s one-piece folding rear seat. The latest model is loosely based on another award winning car from Toyota, the Camry, and it is longer and wider than its predecessor. The latest Highlander model is four inches longer and three inches wider than the current model. The Highlander also comes in a hybrid version which shows that even SUV?s can be environment-friendly and also very fuel efficient.

In choosing the awardees, Consumer Guide only took into consideration new cars or completely redesigned cars introduced at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. A point system is devised by Consumer Guide to determine the winner in the car and truck categories. Each editor allocates 25 points for all the entries but can only give out as much as ten points for a single vehicle. The vehicle with the most number of votes on both the car and truck segment is judged as the winner.

Toyota is the back-to-back winner in the truck segment since the Toyota Tundra has won the same award last year. The Tundra along with the Lexus 350 ES were the first winners of the awards.

The premier provider of new and used car reviews test drives more than 200 cars each year to provide its readers the most useful information concerning new or used cars. Throughout their existence, the institution has serve as a stockpile of knowledge about cars. In a way, they are like a Volvo master cylinder that stores brake or clutch fluid for immediate use when needed.

Ordering Cheap Used Trucks

You can normally purchase previously owned trucks at any local dealer. They are also available in any classified ads and related sites that allow someone to find and purchase a truck on the web.

Ordering a truck is already an important asset to most people. Whether if it is a brand new or previously owned truck, you still must pay up a neat amount in order to purchase the truck you really need.

Before ordering the truck, it is recommended to think about the kind of truck you want to purchase and the options that go along with it. You should do some web research and visit many dealerships. In this manner, you are able to find the best price and have a great transaction.

There are many reasons why most previously owned trucks are not pricey. First, previously owned trucks easily break down. Every year, trucks like this come down 20 % of its initial price that makes it simpler for the driver to purchase a previously owned truck.

The second reason is that it is somewhat difficult to purchase a truck and pay the whole sum available. By using the services of a financial organization like a bank, a driver can pay their loan through monthly bits. Unfortunately, some customers failed to keep that obligation which gives the financial organization no option but to reposes the truck.

For the bank to end collecting the several trucks that they have repossessed and add up to their lost cash, these trucks are made available to the public as soon as possible which makes it easier for a few people to purchase like new trucks and avoid being taken advantage of by some truck dealerships.

It is also better if you research the past of the truck. This is mostly available online. All you need to do is type the truck identification number or VIN. This should help you confirm the repairs the truck has required, if the truck was stolen and know the former owner of the truck.

Usually, trucks have a service history. The orderer should ask for the seller to present it and if it is not available, inquire about the place where the majority of the work was done. In this way, you may know if the inexpensive previously owned truck you bought is still good to use.

Bear in mind to test drive the truck on the road in differing situations and let it be seen by a reputable and highly though of auto mechanic to be sure that the truck you will purchase is street ready.

Finally, you should inquire about the warranty. If there are things not included under it, it is nice to purchase a service plan to be secure. Inexpensive trucks specifically the previously owned trucks are merely a good option to those who can't afford to purchase new ones.

If required, be careful in selecting a truck model and a dealer. Do your homework. Make some comparisons. You hopefully realize it is worth all your work when you purchase the greatest inexpensive previously owned truck in your town.

However, don't just purchase trucks because it has a low price. Sometimes inexpensive trucks are recommended, but they can also be not safe especially if not inspected completely. So, if you have a dream to purchase for an inexpensive one, be sure to research its suitability.

3 American Performance Cars

Bear with me as I step back in time to formulate what I believe are three terrific American built performance cars: the Ford Mustang, the Dodge Challenger, and the Chevrolet Camaro. Currently, only the Mustang is in production with the Challenger coming back by 2009. GM hasn?t committed to building the Camaro just yet, but the company is likely to make a decision in favor of the car and its sibling, the Pontiac Firebird, by this summer. So, what is it about American performance cars that set them apart from the rest? In one word: muscle. Read on as I compare and contrast these three vehicles and share with you my feeble attempts to explain the culture behind the cars.

So, you think I forgot the Chevy Corvette and Dodge Viper when talking about performance cars? No, I did not. Both models are performance cars as well as race cars. On the other hand the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro are mass produced performance cars with muscle. There is a difference in the way a typical race car handles, rides, and performs vs. a muscle car.

Typically, a muscle car was a coupe version of some of the larger cars that were pervasive on U.S. highways in the 1960s and 1970s. The Mustang and Camaro, however, were designed separately [although they both heavily borrowed parts from other models] and these ?pony? cars were a category all to themselves. For comparison?s sake, they join the Dodge Challenger, a performance version of Mopar cars of its time. All three were compared by critics of that time and all three will once again be compared in a few years when production has been ramped up.

Ford Mustang -? Step back in time with me to April 1964 to an era when America was heavily involved in the space race, Lyndon Johnson was president, and General Motors ruled autodom. Ford, for its part, had been nipping at GM?s heels for years, but the failed Edsels of the late 1950s had cost the company dearly. Still, it was the time of the New York World?s Fair and Ford used the fair and television technology to promote its newest offering, the Mustang. A 2+2 coupe borrowing parts from the Fairlane and Falcon, the 1964 ? model was the first one sold and is widely credited with being the best introduction of a new vehicle ever. With a V6 engine standard and V8 optional, the all new Mustang quickly broke sales records and has been a hot seller ever since. Indeed, with the introduction of the ?retro? look Mustang in 2005, the car once again has spawned interest in the muscle car segment as both DaimlerChrysler and General Motors craft competing models of their own.

Dodge Challenger -? After the success of earlier muscle cars including the Dodge Charger and Plymouth ?Cuda, the Dodge Challenger was launched as a 1970 model. The car borrowed heavily from the ?Cuda although the sheet metal was somewhat different and the wheelbase was stretched by a couple of inches. Because the muscle car era was in decline at the time of its introduction, the Challenger lasted only five model years before it was cancelled. The concept Challenger currently on display at many auto shows is based on the 1970 design and is the talk of message boards and blogs across the nation. Look for Hemi powered engines as being favored by many owners; the car is likely to share some technology with the current Magnum wagon and Charger sedan.

Chevrolet Camaro -- GM was asleep at the wheel when the Mustang came out. It took nearly three years before the company could respond and when it did the Camaro and Pontiac Firebird were the result. Although both cars sold well over the years, neither one could match the Mustang?s sales levels and by the time the last cars were sold in 2002, production dropped to a trickle. Still, the end of the Camaro after 35 years has stirred renewed interest in the name and thanks to the retro Mustang, the entire muscle car category is growing once again. Look for a 2010 Camaro to be the first Camaro since 2002; a ragtop version is also being considered.

So, just who can be expected to purchase a muscle car these days? People just like me: middle aged men who grew up with the original models. In addition, a whole new generation of younger drivers tired of the ?me too? look of so many of the compact cars out there. Muscle cars of today are so much different from earlier era cars as they incorporate the look of the originals while harnessing today?s technology. Thus, fuel savings will be decent without sacrificing performance: a true win-win situation.

No, I cannot wait to see a Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro lined up at a traffic light waiting for the light to turn green. A new muscle car era is upon us and for that I am very excited.
